Cockerton is the second sub-Branch
to Darlington to both open and close in the 1960s, joining an elite listof Branches that are
only ever part of Martins Bank. Along with Darlington Auction Mart, and many
other small outlets, it is, for reasons of economy or duplication of
branches, surplus to Barclays’ requirements, and closes around the time of
the merger - In Cockerton, Martins is
at one end of West Auckland Road at No 35, and to this day Barclays is at No
4 – there is obviously no room for two. Local business is brisk enough for
Cockerton to be open for the full six-day banking week. |
